Hey, I’m Nick Mangiaracina

Hi. I’m Nick (he/him), and I’m an author, games journalist, and narrative designer.

Video games have always been an incredible source of comfort, passion, and inspiration in my life. Much of my life has been spent writing traditional and game stories, or about games in some capacity.

Over the past twenty years I’ve been working in the tech industry but my passion for writing has never waned. Though it pains me to leave that industry behind, my passion has always been the written word and I am extremely grateful to have the opportunity to focus on something I’m truly enthusiastic about.

Recently I completed Susan O’Connor’s Game Writing Masterclass.

Coming from tech, I’m offering analytical solutions to design problems with a creative flare. I’ve been primarily designing interactive narrative through Twine but like to experiment in other engines.

I’m looking to be a net-add to any writing group whether it be a large team or a challenge of my own.

If this all sounds good so far, I have more info, writing samples, and contact information below.

I’m looking forward to connecting and hope we can build fantastic worlds together.

Testimonials

“Nick and I were classmates in The Narrative Department Class. Early on in our writing exercises he was able to show the importance of pacing. Given that our exercises were less than five pages, Nick made sure the flow of the plot moved along swimmingly. In addition to pacing, Nick injected humor within each interaction and gave each character a strong, individualistic voice. I can’t wait to see where Nick’s writing takes him and would love to play any game he works on.”

James Starbird, Narrative Department Alumni

“Nick and I were both students in The Narrative Department’s game-writing masterclass. He’s a kind and positive person. He always has nice things to say, but that doesn’t stop him from being objective and honest, which leads him to be very good at giving feedback. His comments always let you see what works and what doesn’t work in your writing, which is why you always learn from what he says. Likewise, he’s good at receiving feedback. These characteristics make him enjoyable to work with, which I think is very valuable when it comes to teamwork. In terms of his writing, he’s very creative, so no matter if he has to write a story based on mechanics, imitate character voices, or come up with a new story for an existing world, he always manages to develop interesting and fun stories.”

Bianca López Agatón, Narrative Department Alumni

“Nick and I were both classmates in the game writing masterclass run by The Narrative Department, and during my time learning alongside him, I had the pleasure to read some of the writing exercises he worked on. Nick’s work showcased a strong awareness of various game narratives and how they are affected by the player. He worked on a short scene and flowchart outline that exhibited strong skills at understanding and writing for established characters and ideas, and his knowledge of writing and writing for games allowed him to provide useful feedback that helped me improve my own work. I know Nick would be a great member for any writing team.”
